Wildcat to Remain Untamed
Your voice is helping shape the future of public lands in Douglas County. Looking ahead to 2026, plans are underway to preserve and protect Wildcat Regional Park—a 202-acre property within the Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area—for conservation, recreation, and long-term sustainability.
Originally dedicated to Douglas County in 2011 through the Highlands Ranch parks land dedication process, the property was initially considered for more active development. However, community feedback told a different story.
Residents expressed a strong preference for a more natural, low-impact use of the space. In response, the County decided not to pursue an active park and instead prioritize preservation and passive recreation.
In late 2025, Commissioners approved the transfer of ownership of Wildcat to the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA), along with $3.5 million from the Parks, Trails, Historic Resources, and Open Space fund.
Over the next three years, HRCA will develop trails and low-impact amenities, ensuring the area remains accessible to the public while maintaining its natural character.
This partnership between the community, HRCA, and Douglas County ensures that Wildcat will remain a place for exploration, quiet recreation, and nature-based experiences—while continuing to protect critical habitat for more than 150 elk and a wide variety of wildlife.
